This policy explains what Echoly collects when you use the app, why, and who else sees it. Echoly is an independent, small-scale project — if anything here is unclear, contact echolylanguage@yahoo.com. Also see our Terms of Service.
Account information. Echoly requires a free account to use. If you sign up with email and password, that email address and an encrypted version of your password are handled by Firebase Authentication (Google) — Echoly's own servers never see your password. If you sign in with Google, we receive the basic profile info Google shares for sign-in (your email address).
Your learning progress. Your completed lessons, streak, and vocabulary review deck are saved to your account (via Firebase/Firestore, Google) so you can pick up where you left off on any device.
Conversation messages. When you practice a conversation, what you type is sent to Echoly's server and, from there, to OpenAI's API to generate the AI's in-character reply and coaching tip.
Scenario and language choices. Which practice scenario and which language you selected for a conversation is sent along with your messages, since the AI needs that context to reply appropriately.
Basic usage analytics. Google Analytics collects standard visit data — pages viewed, referring site, approximate location, device type — plus two events: when a conversation starts and when a message is sent. This is used to understand which scenarios and languages people actually use, and doesn't include the text of your messages.
Firebase (Google). Handles account sign-in and stores your learning progress, as described above. See Firebase's privacy and security page.
OpenAI. Your messages and the running conversation history are processed by OpenAI's API to generate each reply. See OpenAI's privacy policy for how they handle that data.
Google Analytics. Used for the basic usage analytics described above. See Google's privacy policy.
Echoly does not sell your data, and does not share it with anyone else beyond what's described above.
A conversation only exists in your browser while you're practicing it — closing or leaving the page ends it, and nothing about that specific conversation is kept afterward on Echoly's side beyond what's needed to generate that session's replies in the moment. Your account and learning progress are kept until you ask us to delete them.
Echoly is not directed at children under 13, and knowingly does not collect data from them.
If Echoly's data practices change — for example, when accounts, saved conversation history, or payments are introduced — this page will be updated and the "last updated" date above will change.
